On This May 5th:
- > Consider that in America in 1920 US President Woodrow Wilson made the Communist Labor Party illegal on this date;
- > in 1925 Dayton teacher John T. Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in Tennessee on this date and in 1961,
- > Alan Shepard became the 1st American in space (aboard Freedom 7).
You want to celebrate the 1862 insignificant first Mexican-French battle of Puebla you should be aware that the second battle of Puebla resulted in Mexico’s tail being whipped by Napoleon the 3rd’s army, making up for the worthless May 5 loss.
Today it is used as a date to celebrate Mexico.
I can get into that.
I’d like to celebrate France and England. My wife would celebrate Ireland. As much as I really, really like tortillas and guacamole taco concoctions: a country I have never even been to will not be celebrated.
Mexicans should party till they drop and embrace their nation, their culture and their history.
I will too but I don’t remember anyone in this country celebrating King Henry the 2nd Day.
Perhaps we can celebrate Aodh Ordnigh Day. My wife’s grandfather and the 164th High King of Ireland. Aedh Oirdnidhe for the purists. “Son of Niall Frosach (162). After 25 years’ reign, was slain in the battle of Fearta. Was married to Meadhbh, daughter of Ionrachtach, King of Durlus. In his reign prodigious thunder and lightning occurred, which killed many men, women, and children all over the Kingdom, particularly in a nook of the country between Corcavaskin and the sea in Munster, by which one thousand and ten persons were destroyed. In his reign occurred many prodigies – the forerunner of the Danish Invasion, which soon after followed. This Monarch had four sons: I. Naill Caille; II. Maoldoon (Granddaddy), a quo “Siol Muldoon;” III. Fogartach, ancestor of Muintir Cionaodh or Kenny; and IV. Blathmac.” [1]
But alas we don’t have such days to celebrate.
